a few years ago, we started a tradition of taking our Christmas card photos on our red couch. in our backyard, or somewhere outside. this year we discussed retiring the idea, but really GOING BIG for our last couch photo.
so here we are, living in northern arizona, with one glaringly crazy option for our photo location this year. we joked about it and then thought about it and then really thought about it and then went for it! we took our couch to the grand canyon. totally ridiculous, but a fun little adventure for the day. can you believe we had to rent a truck to get it there?
we brought our tripod and because the little ones are never interested in smiling at a tripod we thought at the last minute to bring a bright red doll and some hemp to tie it to the camera. we drove around the rim and found a nice spot and waited for nice light to set everything up. we took several shots with luke running back and forth to the camera in between each one, and got just one where everyone was looking (including unica - that never happens) and smiling. so happy for it.
most of the photos looked like this, with sad and cold and tired little ones. they were great to humor us.
in the few minutes we'd taken to set up and shoot several photos, a small crowd had gathered which made things a bit more awkward and even more ridiculous. but when we were finished, we offered them a chance to take a grand canyon couch photo, and all were interested. above were a few french photographers from saveur magazine who got really into it.
now that we had such a good time of it, and shared the whole story with friends we've been encouraged to keep the couch going. there are so many possibilities of future locations. we will see.
